About this episode
In this episode we explore why change management efforts often fall short, what the knowing-doing gap in leadership is all about and how to close it, and whether it’s possible to build change resilience in your workforce.
I’m delighted to be joined by Rupert Brown, a Chief People Officer with extensive organisational change experience including mergers, acquisitions, digital transformation, joint ventures and turnarounds. He has worked in global multinationals like Procter & Gamble, Maersk and Virgin Media O2 as well as smaller, private equity backed and family owned businesses, and he’s worked overseas for a big chunk of his career. Rupert has authored a new book called Mind the Gap: bridging the knowing/doing gap in leadership during change, to be published in July 2025.
At the heart of it is we need to be mindful of the experience of change, the emotional and relational aspects, as well as the logical ones.
We are experiencing multiple changes simultaneously and driving multiple changes simultaneously … layers of change that take away bandwidth.
If we’re expecting leaders to be empathetic and build these strong relationships during change but they are not honest and competent on the emotional language, then there's going be a disconnect.
