About this episode
Join me as I chat with Simon Wilson, President at Markel International, about the themes I’m exploring in my second business book
People Glue: hold on to your best people by setting them free.
Markel International help the clients to manage risk in complex and ever-shifting environments. They operate in the international wholesale markets in London and across Asia Pacific, and in national markets across Europe and Canada where they deliver specialist insurance solutions for individuals, businesses, and professionals. They have over 1,500 employees, and are part of the broader Markel group.
Simon and I discuss what freedom in our work lives means, how to give people more autonomy without creating a free-for-all, and the 2 levels that he operates at as President to create freedom to operate within the organisation.
We know that in the majority of circumstances, people local to decision making will make better decisions because they're there, they care about it, and then they feel quite emboldened by doing it.
Just having that inner organisational confidence to be called stupid every now and then, I think, is a really healthy thing.
If you want the talent, I think what we have to do as businesses is to say, look, this is us. This is who we are. And if that's not really for you, that's cool… I don't think attempting to keep everyone and attract everyone is ever going to work.
